Solar cell devices made from electronic devices today are very inefficient relative to their inorganic counterparts. One way of potentially improving the overall efficiency of a device is by improving the conversion efficiency. Efficient inter-conversion of energy typically requires highly ordered materials, with a controlled distribution of interfaces. For example, efficient organic solar cells have been made from interpenetrating networks of electron donating and electron accepting materials. We are developing materials combinations and processing methodologies to obtain such structures.
