Chemical Vapor Deposition Copolymerization

Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has been used to polymerize various derivatives of [2,2]-paracyclophane. This creates a reactive coating of poly(p-xylylene) on a surface. We can alter the surface properties by changing the paracyclophane functional group. CVD produces thin, uniform films with few defects, which has applications in biomedical devices, microfabrication, and diagnostic testing. However, few studies have been done that investigate copolymers of two different poly(p-xylylenes). The project aim is to create and characterize copolymers using CVD. If we can control how the copolymerization occurs, then it may be possible to control how the surface properties are distributed, allowing for greater surface control. Two different functional groups at the surface also allows for reactivity with two different species.
