Jessica is working on the development and characterization of new Mg alloys for high-temperature powertrain applications. This is of particular interest to the automotive industry due to the growing need for vehicle weight reduction. Alloys in the Mg-Al-X ternary system (where X = Ca, Sr, Ce, or La) and Mg-Al-Ca-X quaternary system (where X = Sr, Ce, or La) are the focus of the investigation, which is concerned with the solidification behavior, phase equilibria and stability, and mechanical properties of these alloys. Jessica's research will focus on understanding the mechanical properties, esp. creep and the deformation mechanisms responsible. (This project is sponsored by the NSF as part of a Focused Research Group with the University of Wisconsin and Ford Motor Co.)
