Autopolisher

Location: 1021 Gerstacker

Automatically polishes up to six metallographic samples simultaneously

Box Furnace

Location: 1019 Gerstacker

Furnace used for heat treatments of specimens. Capable of temperatures up to 1500 degrees Celcius

Creep Frame

Location: 1036 Gerstacker

Apparatus used for testing creep specimens at elevated temperatures. Also equipped to test samples in vacuum.

Crystalox

Location: 1019 Gerstacker

Crystal growth system used to fabricate single-crystal superalloys.

Cutoff Saws

Location: 1021 Gerstacker

Saws used for cutting samples for further analysis, or polishing. Capable of being used with cutting fluids to reduce damage due to cutting.

Differential Thermal Analysis

Location: 1016 Gerstacker

Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) is a "fingerprinting" technique that provides information on the chemical reactions, phase transformations, and structural changes that occur in a sample during a heat-up or a cool-down cycle. The DTA measures the differences in energies released or absorbed, and the changes in heat capacity of materials as a function of temperature.

Electropolishing Equipment

Location: 1016 Gerstacker

The electropolishing equipment consists of an insulated cooling container, a pump for circulating electrolyte, and a rotating anode to insure an even polish. This is system is designed for versatility so that many different alloy systems and specimen geometries can be polished.

Instron Tester

Location: 1032 Gerstacker

The fatigue testing apparatus is capable of testing at frequencies of up to 20 kHz. We have also developed the ability to test at temperature up to 1000 C and positive mean stresses. A novel technique to introduce defects and measure crack growth rates has been developed as well.

Liquid Metal Cooling Furnace

Location: 1020 Gerstacker

Furnace used for growing single-crystal superalloys with a liquid tin cooling method to reduce imperfections in the cooled metal.

Mounting

Location: 1021 Gerstacker

Mounts metallographic samples in order to prepare them for polishing.

Optical Microscope

Location: 1016 Gerstacker

Optical Microscope with magnification up to 500 X. Also equipped with a camera to photograph the samples.

Oxidation Furnace

Location: 1019 Gerstacker

Furnace used to study the oxidation properties of metallographic samples.

Plater

Location: 1019 Gerstacker

Plates metallographic samples to be used for further analysis.

Polisher

Location: 1021 Gerstacker
