Profs. Thornton, Mazumder, named TMS award winners

Professors Katsuyo Thornton and Jyoti Mazumder have been named award winners from TMS - The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society.

Congratulations to Professors Katsuyo Thornton and Jyoti Mazumder, who have been named 2018 TMS (The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society) award winners. Both will be officially recognized at the TMS Annual Meeting in Phoenix next March.

Professor Katsuyo Thornton has won the 2018 Brimacombe Medalist Award, a mid-career award which recognizes individuals with sustained excellence and achievement in business, technology, education, public policy, or science related to materials science and engineering, and with a record of continuing service to the profession.

Professor Jyotirmoy Mazumder is the recipient of the 2018 Bruce Chalmers Award, which recognizes an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the science and/or technology of materials processing and includes a life membership to TMS. The award honors Bruce Chalmers, a professor of metallurgy and former master of John Winthrop House at Harvard University. Chalmers was a senior researcher in physics and atomic energy during and after World War II in Britain. He joined the Harvard faculty as Gordon McKay Professor of Metallurgy in 1953. Dr. Chalmers served as master of Winthrop House, an undergraduate residence, from 1964 to 1975. He retired in 1977 after 24 years as a professor in Harvard's division of engineering and applied sciences. Harvard University called him “an authority in the field of metallurgy.”
