Jonathan S. Custer, Sandia Nantional Laboratory

Sandia National Laboratories is using a broad range of materials for MEMS and microsystems. The use of new materials or materials under new circumstances presents challenges in understanding the limits to microsystem performance and reliability. In this talk, I will discuss three topics in the area of microsystems materials. The first is on materials properties (i.e. strength and fatigue) and the influence of microstructure. Second, as systems get small, intuition is no longer a good guide to how materials will perform. The main topic will be microforce electrical contact behavior. Finally, I will discuss development and integration of electro-active ceramic films for rf circuits, a (rare) case where being micro helps the material.
